Illinois health care shopping for coverage has definitely changed over the last year thanks to the Affordable Care Act. They voted “yes” for Medicaid expansion and all individuals can now buy coverage through “Get Covered Illinois” despite previously existing conditions. This means that Illinois’ 1.8 million (14% of the population)* uninsured individuals can afford coverage.
Despite these changes, the uninsured population still exists and we are seeing more patients shopping around for care. This rise in healthcare consumerism has brought a rise in transparency and physicians throughout Illinois are falling into suit.
Even those individuals with high deductible plans are demanding price and quality transparency for health care procedures, appointments and coverage.
This becomes a huge problem for patients who have to come out-of-pocket to pay for expensive imaging procedures like MRIs, CT scans or mammograms. A CT or MRI can cost up to $5000 in some instances. Illinois patients can now find an MRI for about $575 and a CT scan for around $400 on Save On Medical.
