Florida, the home to Mickey Mouse, the everglades, gorgeous beaches and most importantly to me, Key West’s Duval Street and Florida State University. It’s a favorite vacation spot and paradise for retirees, but there are a lot of things about the Sunshine State most of its residents don’t even know. For instance did you know:

  • If an elephant is left tied to a parking meter, you have to pay a parking fee just like a car
  •  A special law prohibits unmarried women from parachuting on Sundays
  • Once a year, thousands of Floridians in Pensacola host an event where they toss dead fish over the border into Alabama
  • Plant City is home to the Guinness Book of World Record’s largest strawberry shortcake, weighing in at 6,000 pounds and 827 square feet
  • Florida is the #2 most uninsured state in the country, just behind Texas.

It’s hard to believe that Florida would be so high on the list of uninsured Americans but let’s look at the numbers:

  • 311,591,917 people live in the United States and 19,057,542 of them live in Florida
  • 16.3% of Americans are uninsured, that’s 49.9 Million
  • 29.8% of Florida Residents are uninsured, that’s 5.7 Million

Highest uninsured populations by county in Florida:

  • DeSoto County: 37%
  • Hardee County: 30%+
  • Collier County: 30%+
  • Hendry County: 30%+
  • Okeechobee County: 30%+
  • Miami-Dade County: 30.2%
  • Osceola County: 26%

Tampa, Florida Uninsured populations by county:

  • Citrus: 25%
  • Hernando: 26.8%
  • Hillsborough: 27.3%
  • Pasco 26.1%
  • Pinellas 25.7%

We know. We were kind of shocked by these numbers too.

This is why we’ve been focusing on improving price transparency in all of the Florida markets, especially in the counties with high, uninsured populations.
